I’m not sure if Liam realizes it, but he’s just begging me to take off his clothes completely and let him learn the hard way about how to use the toilet (and more importantly, when). The fact that he is now using the crackers he’s given with his hummus as a shovel (i.e. he simply uses the same cracker for the duration of his meal and licks all the hummus off over and over) is a sure sign that he’s ready, I’m guessing? I mean, surely he knows that at some point the hummus poo is going to do me in…or maybe it’s all a part of some sort of sinister plan?
We went the naked route with Brady and it worked like a charm. Learned to use the potty in about 2 days! You may want to give it a shot.
I’ve been thinking about it for a while now…one very specific question about the only downside that I can see: How do you keep the excretions contained in the meantime? If you’ve got a good suggestion for this, then I’ll definitely give him a few weeks to get used to his “big boy bed” (where he’ll move tomorrow during his nap) and go for it!
I think Brady was just plain ready (helps having an older sibling!). Anyway, the first time he started to go, a little came out and he stopped himself. I will say that the peeing was a bit harder, but those accidents happened after our “naked” time and when he was wearing underwear. You are lucky because it is warm outside, so perhaps you could spend more time in the backyard while he is learning and then the messes won’t be so big. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice! I think that Liam’s body is ready, but his will, his will is strong…the only reason I thought that the naked method might work for him is because A)I think it will make him much more aware of what’s going on and make him pay attention when things are happening (paying attention to anything that I want him to pay attention to seems to be an issue already, oy vey…) and B)His Gran already bought him a bunch of “big boy underwear” and the most interest I’ve seen him show is related to getting to wear that, so maybe he won’t want to mess them up with pee and poop…who knows. It’s worth a go, and if he’s just not ready yet, he’s not ready and we’ll try again later.
