Siesta Key 2011: Family Photo

We convinced (and by convinced I mean we announced, with no other options given) Pok to go with us to the beach one afternoon so we could get some family shots.  I couldn’t be any happier with how they turned out.

The first step was to figure out how to work the remote control.

Testing, testing…

img_0067.jpg

Still working…

img_0068.jpg

What you don’t see in each of the shots above is that Matt was desperately trying to catch himself in midair using the remote.  In each of the above attempts the remote fired at the wrong time.  If you know Matt you know that there was no way he was giving up that easily…

img_0069.jpg

After we got that out of the way we had to get situated…

img_0070.jpg

But when we finally got to this point, the results were well worth it!

img_0072.jpg

img_0076.jpg

Then we broke it down into a smaller group.  I LOVE this shot!

img_0082.jpg

img_0084.jpg

This is just after we lost Liam…

img_0089.jpg

Thankfully Paige was having a blast with Mo and Pok and I got the chance to take some pictures:

Liam had a major case of the wiggleworms so he and Matt decided to go for a short run to shake some of it off…

img_0135.jpg

This is where Paige discovered that sunglasses also make great teethers…

img_0147.jpg

Paige also had a case of the wiggleworms so Gran took her on a little walk:

And here they come!

(Another) Day At The Beach

Liam shows Paige the finer points of sand shoveling:

Baby Girl’s got style!

Three cheers for BOGO Walgreens shades!

img_9828.jpg

img_9829.jpg

img_9831.jpg

It’s just almost more than I can stand!

img_9834.jpg

“OOOOOO!”

img_9835.jpg

This is not a fluke.  Baby Girl loves anything that rolls.  She’s trying desperately to learn how to kick before she learns how to walk.  She just added to her vocabulary with (you guessed it) the word ‘ball.’  Matt’s trying to decide if she should be a top professional soccer player or President of the World.  I can’t make this stuff up.

img_9838.jpg

You don’t think she’s Matt’s daughter, do you?

Liam gets a little help with castle-building from Granddaddy.  Paige contemplates the most efficient way to destroy a sandcastle.

Liam:  This big!

Tall and small:

These are the best examples I have to show the enormous clumps of sand around her mouth.  Clumps that pale by comparison to the ones that actually made it *into* her mouth.  Really.

Even more to come!

(Another) Late Afternoon At The Beach

On our next late afternoon trip to the beach Matt brought the kite and attempted to fly it with Liam.  The wind wasn’t completely cooperative and the string ended up in a tangled heap, but the journey is what matters and it was a fun trip getting to that point.

Matt did manage to get it off the ground:

img_9642.jpg

Liam races over to have his turn as soon as he realizes that there has been successful liftoff:

img_9645.jpg

Liam helps:

img_9648.jpg

Before we released Paige I took advantage of the situation and got a quick shot of the two of us:

img_9706.jpg

Off she goes (again)!

img_9709.jpg

img_9721.jpg

Notice how we keep getting closer and closer and closer to the water?  We learned our lesson from the previous visit and everyone was dressed for both sand *and* water this time.  Very wise decision.

img_9723.jpg

“Seaweed!”

img_9726.jpg

“Check it out, Mama!”

img_9734.jpg

Love.  Love.  Love.

img_9735.jpg

This was the portion of the afternoon where Gran worked furiously to keep Paige from drowning while I was busy taking pictures…

img_9741.jpg

Brief break:

img_9743.jpg

img_9745.jpg

Ahhhhhh…

img_9747.jpg

img_9748.jpg

Gran got quite a workout:

img_9750.jpg

See that look on Paige’s face?  Unadulterated exultation, fists clenched, ready to wind up and go again?  Yeah.  That wasn’t a fluke.

Sheer joy:

Almost two weeks later and my body and my house have still not recovered from this trip, but looking at these pictures makes me want to do it all again tomorrow!

Late Afternoon At The Beach

Late afternoon at the beach is wonderful.  It’s cooler, the UV index is generally low enough to skip the sunscreen, the hoards of people have gone inside for dinner, and the lighting is fabulous.  I hope that Baby Girl’s schedule next year allows for more visits during this time of day.  I’m already looking forward to it!

img_9346.jpg

Paige is excited!

img_9348.jpg

I tried to get some good shots of me and my baby girl in front of the sea oats…

img_9351.jpg

img_9352.jpg

She looks like she’s having so much fun…or she’s completely over the Mama kisses…whichever…

img_9359.jpg

Let me just tell you how much she wanted to be held at this point…

img_9360.jpg

…although she obliged Gran for a few shots anyway:

img_9382.jpg

For a few moments, at least…

img_9383.jpg

img_9386.jpg

“Finally!”

img_9388.jpg

This is what happens when you take the world’s cutest baby girl and add in the world’s most beautiful sand…

img_9396.jpg

…and then throw in a camera-wielding Mama with an itchy trigger finger…

img_9399.jpg

img_9402.jpg

img_9407.jpg

I vehemently defend my camera-wielding and back it up with occasional shots like this one:

img_9413.jpg

img_9414.jpg

Ahhhhhh…

img_9417.jpg

He enjoyed himself just as much as Paige did, it was just that he was moving so fast the *entire* time that it was difficult for me to capture…

img_9421.jpg

My babies:

img_9422.jpg

Togetherness.

img_9425.jpg

Liam successfully continues his campaign to make sure he’s never looking in the general direction of the camera (in a pleasant way) at the same time Paige is doing so…

img_9467.jpg

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should never underestimate the power of a well-timed bribe as a tool in your parenting arsenal:

img_9469.jpg

Remember how I likened Paige-at-the-beach to a sea turtle returning home?  Yeah, I wasn’t kidding about that…

img_9472.jpg

Brother break:

img_9487.jpg

Aaaaaannnnnd, she’s off (again)!

img_9488.jpg

And so is he…

img_9489.jpg

There they go!

img_9490.jpg

Momentary funny-face break:

img_9492.jpg

Oh, how this baby loves sand!

img_9493.jpg

“What’s that, Mama?  You say you need insane amounts of adorable?”

img_9508.jpg

“I can do that!”

img_9510.jpg

Yes, Baby Girl.  You sure can.

img_9519.jpg

Too much.  It’s just too much.

With Gran and Granddaddy:

img_9544.jpg

I love this one:

img_9546.jpg

Gran should consider herself lucky that her hair wasn’t thinning before we tried this because Paige put in her best effort to change that…

img_9550.jpg

Brother love:

img_9567.jpg

I tried to get a shot of Liam and Granddaddy, but this is the best I could capture…

img_9583.jpg

Just wait until you see the next late afternoon series!

At The Pool

Liam made a lot of swimming progress during our trip.  He started out hesitantly in a floatation vest.  In a matter of days he was enthusiastically jumping off the side in water wings, floating on his own all over the pool, and kicking his way to whatever he wanted to do.  He had a ball.  Here are a few pictures:

img_9282.jpg

His early jumping form was basically stepping off the edge towards Matt:

img_9283.jpg

But the end result was the same:

img_9284.jpg

No matter his form, he was having a blast!

And he wasn’t trying to push Paige down this time!

img_9220.jpg

This one is out of focus — but the look on her face is just so quintessentially Paige that I couldn’t leave it out…

Aaaaannnnnd, she’s off!

Sometimes you just gotta dance…

img_9235.jpg

…and sometimes you just gotta run.

img_9240.jpg

And run.

img_9242.jpg

And run until you’re just a blur to the camera lens.

img_9241.jpg

And if you’re Paige?  Sometimes you just gotta hide under the table.

img_9246.jpg

This is the look of sheer concentration she gets when she’s trying to figure out how to destroy something she’s never destroyed before:

I’m really hoping to have this series finished before Paige’s birthday but I’m not making any promises!

Happy Birthday, Sylvie Faye!

Liam is very excited about Sylvie’s birthday party today.  Here is a conversation we just had about it:

Shannon:  In a couple of hours we’re going to go to Sylvie’s birthday party.  Won’t that be fun?!

Liam:  Oh yes, Mama!  I’m so excited!  Hey Mama?

Shannon:  Yes?

Liam:  I think that maybe if Sylvie has some birthday cake I might have a piece.  Would that be okay?

Shannon:  Of course.  But you never know if there’ll be cake before you get there.  They might do something different.

Liam:  Oh, Mama.  If there’s no cake then it can’t be Sylvie’s birthday.  There can’t be a birthday without cake!

Shannon:  Well–you and Paige will have cake at your parties but sometimes other people do things differently and that’s okay, too.

Liam:  Well…there really can’t be a birthday party without cake.  If PJ doesn’t have one for Sylvie we’ll just have to go get her one at the store, okay?  Also, Mama?  There can’t be a birthday party without balloons.  What if PJ doesn’t have any balloons for Sylvie?  Then we’ll have to go get balloons, too!  I think we need to go to the store, Mama.  We need to go to the store to get cake and balloons.  Just in case.  I really need to make sure Sylvie’s party is *very* special.  Okay, Mama?  How does that sound?

Shannon:  I think we can be sure that PJ has made sure Sylvie’s party will be special, Liam.  I don’t think we need to worry about that.

Liam:  But Mama?  Sometimes Mamas are very busy and PJ might be very busy and she might need some help from Mister Liam.  Sure.  She surely might.

Shannon:  Very wise, Liam.  Very wise, indeed.

—————————–

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I was sitting in a Virginia hotel room, like a beached whale, anxiously awaiting news of Sylvie’s arrival.  Happy, happy, happy birthday, sweet Sylvie Faye!

Siesta Key 2011, First Day At The Beach

Paige took to the beach like a fish to water (pun intended).  Liam’s first trip to the beach in 2008 included a short venture out onto the sand where he looked very confused by the lack of footing and eventually ate sand and cried.  Paige’s reaction was the opposite of that (except the eating sand part).  It was like she was a turtle returning to the sea.

Here are the only pictures of either of my children in the beach tent that I felt very strongly that we would need.  Oh well…

img_8965.jpg

Model:

img_8972.jpg

As soon as Paige finished posing and ventured outside the tent she was off to the races…

img_8979.jpg

Liam shows his sister the finer points of sand play:

img_8982.jpg

So much sand, so little time:

img_8983.jpg

There is a very good reason that I took 8,342 pictures of Paige on this trip:

img_8984.jpg

Need I say more?

img_8989.jpg

img_8992.jpg

Liam works on his swing:

And here’s where I got the (clearly insane) idea to try to get a picture of Matt and our children.  In the same frame.  Looking at or near the camera.  With at least an air of pleasantness.  The pictures speak for themselves.

img_9078.jpg

img_9080.jpg

At this point even Paige is saying “Really, Mama?  Truly?”
